Meet Ammereta Gaskin, LMFT

My Story: Owner & Lead Therapist

Ammereta Gaskin, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, and anxiety expert. Every day she helps people create healthy relationships by teaching them how to assess their foundation and redevelop effective communication approaches. She has practiced therapy for 10 years and is the owner and lead therapist of the private practice, Refined Vision Therapy.

Ammereta is a co-host on the podcast The Sedated Therapist where the focus is to destigmatize mental health in black culture, dismantle myths and introduce the benefits of therapy through related conversations and cultural topics. She has appeared on numerous podcasts such as Culture and Conversation and Words with KB as a resident therapist where she gave an expert perspective on cultural millennial topics.

Her own “soul care” routine consists of roller skating, throwing paint on a canvas, dancing amongst the sand and waves, and a New-York-style slice of pizza!

  • Ammereta earned her undergraduate degree from the HBCU, Savannah State University, in Savannah, GA. She earned her graduate degree from Mercer University in Macon, GA. She has additional certification in pre-marital counseling and advanced training for counseling adults with anxiety disorders.

  • My formal education includes Family Systems Theory which holds the premise that what happens to one person will impact another. This approach guides my practice for revealing dysfunctional behavior patterns stemming from family dynamics. I utilize various scientifically proven, highly effective therapeutic modalities primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Gottman Couples Relationship Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy and a range mindfulness practices. With my clients, I emphasize psychoeducation so there is a clear understanding of “why” before the “how” or “healing”.

WHY THERAPY AND WHY THAT FOCUS

Experiencing my first panic attack set me on a whirlwind, and yes, feeling literally like a whirlwind! My own experience with anxiety has stemmed from worry for the future and feeling burdened by wanting to control what was out of my control.  I realized how panic in its heightened form can stop me in my tracks from reaching my achievable goals. It was through my own therapy journey that I found understanding, better beliefs about myself, identifying strategies and techniques to manage the physical discomfort of panic and the mental scramble that can throw me off my best game.

Over the past 10 years my “why therapy” has evolved which keeps me motivated and anchored in my gift for caring, empathizing and being a trusted companion to my client's journey through change and healing. Therapy is a process that deserves a non-judgmental approach, willingness to change, client led insight and someone who is listening to their true concern. I enjoy unveiling different perspectives and understandings of self and partnerships. I believe in shedding old beliefs that no longer serve you and developing the new. My hope is that my clients walk away feeling connected to their best self and loved ones. Welcome to therapy, you have chosen to show up for you!
